Contamination surveys: Phase one

Fast turnaround phase one contamination reports for planning applications, plus full one stop shop backup services available from the Wheal Jane Group.

Land and buildings can be affected by ground contamination from a wide variety of sources. An area particularly rich in minerals and metals, Cornwall’s hard rock mining heritage means that contamination can arise due to either former mining operations or naturally-occurring mineralisation associated with the geology of the area.

Assessing potential risks from ground contamination and remediation is an integral part of the planning and building control process. Wheal Jane Consultancy undertakes contamination investigations and prepares reports and remediation strategies for all types and sizes of site in any location, including abandoned industrial, greenfield, marine and shoreline sites.

We begin a phase one investigation and risk assessment with a desk-based study of published data and a non-intrusive site walkover. This enables an expert assessment by a qualified geologist of the risks to the property, not only from the affects of mining, such as contamination and ground stability, but a range of other potential risks including flooding and previous industrial processes.

If we identify potential risks our reports will suggest appropriate further work to fully evaluate those risks (phase two) before recommending corrective measures if necessary.

We then employ our partner companies; Wheal Jane Laboratory to carry out soil analysis at our in-house analytical laboratory and Carnon Contracting to carry out required remediation works (phase three). To complete the process we inspect the works and provide a Certificate of Completion to satisfy the requirements of the Planning Authority (phase four). The result is a seamless operation which not only meets the requirements of the Planning Authority but keeps your project on schedule.
