What is a Phase 1 Desk Study?
The Phase 1 Desk Study is an initial risk assessment based on BS10175:2011 and in line with the National Planning Policy Framework. It’s sometimes referred to as a preliminary investigation, preliminary risk assessment, or contaminated land risk assessment. This document helps assess potential environmental risks related to contamination and other hazards on the site, forming the foundation for any future investigation or remediation work.
As part of every Phase 1 Desk Study, we always conduct a walkover survey. This includes a visual inspection of the site to identify any obvious signs of contamination (e.g., leaking oil tanks, asbestos). We also take photographs to document our findings and include them in the Preliminary Risk Assessment.
