Hole in garden Hidden mine shaftFor most of us the present long, dry and hot spell is a welcome change after very average summers during recent years.

The downside of course is that, in traditional mining areas such as Cornwall, when such a spell ends with heavy or persistent rain, as it usually does, the likelihood of mine shaft collapses increases.
